UPSC IAS Exam Cutoff 2021

UPSC conducts Civil Services Exam every year to shortlist candidates for recruitment in IAS services. Candidates have to qualify in three stages in order to get finally selected.

In each stage, the UPSC cutoff score is declared after the commission releases the PDF containing the roll numbers of the qualified candidates. Each round is an elimination round.

Only those candidates who qualify for the UPSC cutoff score for Prelims will get a chance to appear for Prelims; subsequently, only those candidates who qualify for the UPSC cutoff score for Mains get a chance to appear for the Mains.

Let’s go through some of the important points based on how the Cut off for the UPSC is calculated:

  1. The marks of Prelims Cut off are based on paper 1 of the prelims or the GS paper only. The marks that you secure in Paper 2 will not be considered when counting your merit ranking. Paper 2 is qualifying in nature and you need to score at least 33 % in it to qualify for the Mains round.
  2. The cut off marks for the UPSC basically are the marks secured that the last candidate that was selected for that round. The cut-off marks for both the UPSC rounds of Prelims and Mains are released only after the final IAS results of the exams for the year are declared.
  3. Given below are a few cases that the UPSC has offered clarifications on:
  • Case 1 — If 2 aspirants score equal aggregate marks in the UPSC exam, then the aspirant who has secured more marks in the compulsory papers + the IAS Interview, is given a higher rank by the UPSC.
  • Case 2 — If 2 candidates score equal marks in the compulsory papers and the interviews taken together, the candidate who is senior in age will be given a higher rank.
  • Case 3 — If 2 candidates score equal marks in the compulsory papers and the interviews taken together, and are also of the same age, then the candidate with more marks in the compulsory papers will be given a higher rank.
